2011 NFL Mock Draft: Carolina Panthers Take Patrick Peterson No. 1 Overall

Article By on 11th March, 2011

Patrick Peterson Becomes First Cornerback Taken No. 1 Overall

Ever since Andrew Luck decided to go back for one more season at Stanford, exactly who the Carolina Panthers would take with their No. 1 overall pick has been the subject of much debate. Draft pundits have had everyone from Clemson’s Da’Quan Bowers to Auburn teammates Nick Fairley and Cam Newton going with the first pick. But after the NFL Scouting Combine, it was apparent that the best prospect was none of the above.

Instead, it was LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson.

Peterson absolutely dominated at the Combine, showing off a seemingly impossible blend of size and speed (4.34 40-yard dash) and generally wowing scouts with everything he did. Everyone knew he was good, but I don’t think anybody knew he was that good.

The Panthers have holes all over their roster, but it just so happens that they could use a cornerback. No team has ever taken a corner No. 1 overall before, but Peterson is good enough to be the first. And if the Panthers have any sense, he will be.
