In order to reach the maximum, the Saints used three roster exemptions for suspended players Charles Grant, Will Smith, and Garrett Hartley. The team also placed three players, tight end Billy Miller, safety Chip Vaughn, and fullback Olaniyi Sobomehin, on injured reserved.
The Saints then traded their seventh round pick in 2011 to the New England Patriots for tight end David Thomas. Thomas has 13 starts in three seasons and has been mostly utilized as a blocker.
