Talking is now over. The new look 3-4 defense for the Georgia Bulldogs will take center stage on Saturday between the hedges when the Bulldogs face Louisiana-Lafayette.
When fans get a close look at the unit on Saturday, they will be asking themselves, will they be better by the time they get to November?
The answer to that question is yes, but because of the new system and with players moving to new positions, there will be some growing pains.
Fortunately, they can get their feet wet on Saturday against the Ragin’ Cajuns before conference play starts the following week when they travel to South Carolina.
So what is to except from this defense in the first game of the season?
One thing to look for is how nose tackle Justin Anderson does in his first real action on defense after playing on the offensive line the last two years. He will go up against center Ian Burks who moved from guard after losing their four-year starter Chris Fisher.
DeAngleo Tyson will also play some nose but will see a bulk of his time at defensive end.
Outside linebacker Justin Houston had an all-SEC year in 2009 at the defensive end position. With the new alignment, he should match the numbers he had last year and it will start on Saturday. He will be after quarterback Chris Masson all game long, but Masson is mobile so Houston will have to play smart the entire game.
Inside linebacker Akeem Dent and Christian Robinson should have big numbers at the end of the day, because the Ragin’ Canjuns love to run the ball. The problem for the Cajuns now is the fact they have to replace their two starters at running back, so it could be a running back by committee which will include Robert Walker, Aaron Spikes, Julian Shankle and Kevis Streeter.
Cornerback Brandon Boykin should make plays, as he is going up against receiver Marlin Miller who led the team in receiving last year with 325 yards on 37 catches.
Vance Cuff, Branden Smith and Sanders Commings will have big days as well because the wide receiving unit is not the strength of the team, although it is one of the deepest.
Freshman Jakar Hamilton has impressed my people in the Bulldog camp and he will have a chance to show the entire Bulldog Nation what he can do on Saturday as he will start at strong safety. He will start ahead of Nick Williams who will see a lot of action in the game.
And speaking of safeties, if the Dawgs are blowing out Lafayette don’t be surprised if blue-chip recruit Alec Ogletree gets some action at the safety spot. Ogletree has been compared to former Georgia great Thomas Davis because of his speed and physicality. He is listed third string on the depth chart.
Overall, expect defensive coordinator Todd Grantham to be aggressive early and try to force the Ragin’ Canjun offense to commit turnovers, something Georgia could not do last year.
If everything goes according to plan, it should be a successful day for the unit. If they give up 21 points and force zero turnovers, then it will be back to the drawing board for Grantham because it’s not going to get easier.
