Westphal, rated as the No. 1 player in the state while he was a senior in Menasha, WI, redshirted his freshman year at UW and then suffered a serious shoulder injury that required extensive surgery, causing him to miss last season.

After meeting with coaches, Westphal felt that it was time to move on because he didn't believe they intended to make him a key part of the Badger defense next year.
