In any given season, only a severely limited number of teams are able to concoct the right combination of skill, mental toughness, health, and luck that is needed to avoid the myriad obstacles that line a 13- or 14-game season. And while a spotless record is typically achieved only by the crème de la crème of the college football world, every once in a while an unexpected newcomer finds the magic formula, if only for a season, and steps forward into the spotlight.
