NCAA President Myles Brand Dies At 67

As president, Brand stressed the need for academic responsibility in years when increasing competition among schools challenged the legitimacy of the classroom for athletes on campus.

Brand's office was at the forefront of establishing the APR, or academic progress rate, of a school, which counts transfers and ineligibilities due to low grades as penalties against a school's score. After losing a certain number of APR points, schools can now face lost scholarships or other sanctions, giving them incentive to pay attention to athlete's academic responsibilities and to stress the classroom first.
