Among Ely's top schools of choice were LSU, Clemson, Wake Forrest and Ole Miss, so it was quite a surprise to many when he accepted an offer from the 2009 BCS Champion Alabama.
Although the 15th ranked QB in the nation had been very quiet about his recruiting, many believed that Phillip Ely would choose LSU.
When asked about his stunning decision, Ely had this to say: "You want to play for a program like that because they are the champions. The coaches and players there understand what it takes to win."
