... rankings usually mean next to nothing. Are they fun to think about? Sure. Are they really an accurate prediction of the upcoming season? Probably not. In the 2009 AP Preseason Top 25 poll, Oklahoma and USC were ranked third and fourth respectively. Well, USC struggled to a 9-4 record, and Sam Bradford went down early in the season before the Sooners limped their way to an 8-5 finish. The college football season is just too unpredictable. Injuries, breakout players, schedules and actual play on the field will mean much more come bowl season than any preseason ranking. Still, that won’t stop anyone from ranking college football’s top 25 teams before a game is even played, including me.
