Welcome to the lovely world of sports journalism, where bloggers for a team website are deem creditable if they come up with dirt on another team.

It’s been reported by a known Auburn blogger Jeffery Lee of the Rivals Auburn site, that allegedly  Alabama paid for running back Brent Calloway to switch his commitment back to Alabama after he de-committed the first time and went to Auburn.

Lee went on a Mobile radio station and made all these statements saying that Calloway got a brand new car, that some booster or as Lee says “supporter” took the kid to Florida for the weekend, and that his parents received $2500 in cash.

All of this would be a shocking; problem is no one else really picked up the story. Oh there were a couple of outlets like NBC Sports and of course our beloved Bleacher Report, but so far no ESPN, CBSSportsline or the fair and balance news reporting at Fox to this point haven’t picked up Lee’s story.

Hmmm wonder why? Probably because as Lee admitted in his first interview, he had no real proof. No tapes, no paper trails, no pictures just allegations of wrong doing.

Lee was supposed to go back on the air today with the rest of the story, but apparently was quickly shut up by either his employer Rivals, or decided it would be in his best interest just to keep his mouth shut.

The problem with this, is not really the story itself, but Lee. Once the story hit so to speak, we found out who the real Jeffery Lee is and slowly, the story itself lost a lot of creditability among the national media. Lee apparently hated people talking about Cam Newton so much that he posted a person’s personal information on his website so this person could be harassed by others. Lee makes no bones about hating the University of Alabama, another reason why he wasn’t taken seriously, not to mention who works for an Auburn website.

Doesn’t it look kinda of strange that an Auburn “man” (he graduated from Auburn too) would know about the Alabama situation? You would think maybe as some has suggested he ran with this story because a coach at Auburn said it to him in private and knew or maybe even told Lee to run with the story just to take the heat off Auburn?

That’s what it looks like. With former Auburn players making claims that there was a pay to play system at Auburn and apparently the NCAA is still looking at the Cam Newton situation, wouldn’t it be the perfect time to sling mud at your rival just to take the spotlight off of your school and its problems?

It sure looks that way. Even if these allegations are true, it sounds like Lee unintentionally helped the University of Alabama. According to Tidesports.com, the university is looking into the situation and as of tonight, no dice.

If Calloway did take some money or was promised some money, it really can’t hurt Bama because the kid hasn’t stepped foot on campus yet and hasn’t played a game. But the biggest thing is where is the proof? Other then the hearsay from Lee, there is none.

One of the first things they teach you in Journalism 101 is to have sources, if you don’t have any sources or proof, you don’t run with the story. Apparently in Jeffery Lee’s case, he missed class that day at Auburn.
