Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy may be on Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett’s draft hit list after scoring a 43 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test.

The Cowboys may be on the look out for a quarterback to back-up Tony Romo as current relief quarterback; Jon Kitna is 38 and Stephen McGee is still a work in progress. While Garrett isn’t the chief who chose to sign Romo, he is the man’s offensive play caller. Not to mention, Tony scored a 37 on his Wonderlic which is fifth best amongst active quarterbacks.

Scoring high on the Wonderlic doesn’t always guarantee success, as Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick received a grade of 48, 49ers incoming back-up Alex Smith got a 40, and oft-injured Detroit Lions head man Matthew Stafford scored a 38.

That group is a mixed bag of lemons and limes, which proves that a high score will not determine someone’s success in the National Football League.

So why in the world would Jason Garrett go after a guy like McElroy, who was average at best at Alabama, when the Cowboys need to address areas like the secondary and the offensive line? Because Garrett has an eye toward the future of the franchise maybe?

McElroy’s idol in the NFL is Patriots three-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Tom Brady, who scored a 33 on the Wonderlic. McElroy said that he admires Brady’s control, balance and self-management in the pocket.

Greg has a nice frame standing a 6’2″, 220 pounds with an average throwing arm and isn’t prone to mistakes, something the Cowboys could use. McElroy came of age in Alabama playing in head coach Nick Saban’s pro style offense. But he completed only 60 percent of his passes in 2009, the season when the Tide won the National Championship.

A detriment to choosing McElroy so early is that the Cowboys will fill a position that isn’t a direct need for the team. There will be plenty of offensive and defensive linemen, safeties and cornerbacks available to choose from in that round so Garrett has no reason to reach for McElroy.

Also, if McElroy is chosen then the Cowboys will have to let either Kitna or McGee to the wind. If Kitna is released then there is no veteran presence and if Romo goes down again there is only a rookie or third-year player with little to no playing time available.

If McGee is allowed to go to free agency, then the two years of time the team has spent developing the former Texas A&M star is flushed down the toilet.

While I believe that talk of McElroy going to Dallas in the second round is just pre-draft gibberish, I do think that if he’s available in the sixth or seventh round then Dallas will for sure pull the trigger.

Romo’s 31 and Kitna’s 38, and if Romo has one ore two more seasons where he takes the Cowboys down the street and not to the Super Bowl, I’m sure brother Jerry Jones’ patience will wear out.
