2011 NFL Draft: Tennessee Titans Eye Newton, Gabbert with Their First Pick

Article By on 13th March, 2011

The Titans Could Be Tempted To Trade Up To Make Sure They Get A QB First

The Tennessee Titans are moving on from Vince Young, which means they have to draft a new franchise quarterback in 2011.

The Titans probably would prefer to get that out of the way with their first pick, but both Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton could be gone by the time the Titans go on the clock.

With that in mind, ESPN’s Mel Kiper predicts the Titans will miss out on Newton and Gabbert and just end up drafting Da’Quan Bowers in his latest mock draft.

“Tennessee targeted its pass rush in the first round last year,” said Kiper. “But Bowers simply represents too much value at this position and with the pass rush still in need of an upgrade, he provides immediate help as well.”

Kiper has a point if Bowers does fall to the eighth pick, he does become too valuable to pass up. Bowers is projected to be a Top 5 pick, but so are about 10 other guys, so somebody has to lose.

If the Titans have to wait until the second round to draft a quarterback, ESPN’s Paul Kuharsky speculates the Titans may go with Colin Kaepernick or Andy Dalton if Kerry Collins is not the guy.

“If Collins isn’t an option, then the Titans need someone who is ready to step in earlier,” he said. “Dalton makes the most sense in that scenario. He’s a sound decision-maker and we’re confident in his ability to transition to a pro style offense. I also think he’s got enough arm strength and touch to find [Kenny] Britt downfield.”

The Titans will need a little luck to get Newton or Gabbert in the first round, but stranger things have happened.
