2011 NFL Draft: Simply Put, Cam Newton Is the Top Prospect

Article By on 5th March, 2011

Concerns about Cam Newton’s potential as an NFL quarterback have gotten more press time than Charlie Sheen, but I just don’t get it.

First of all, people have questioned his ability to read defenses, something that is supposed to be a big deal in the NFL, given the complex schemes he will face and the overall ability on that side of the ball at the sport’s highest level.

But seriously, what does quick and precise diagnosis have to do with intelligence? A strong arm is much more important when it comes to decision-making.

Then you have accuracy, another source of scrutiny when it comes Newton’s tools. However, don’t put too much emphasis on a thing like that as it pertains to completing passes. Let’s face it. Being a big guy who, relative to his size, can run like “Forrest Gump,” overtakes precision through the air any old day.

Newton’s character concerns? Heck, no concern at all. When you think about it, how could being a perceived thug ever have anything to do with investing millions upon millions of dollars in a player? It’s not like criminal behavior could ever affect playing time or bring negative publicity on an organization.

And he’s also a quarterback, probably the safest bet among all positions when it comes to predicting NFL success. Very few times have we seen a “sure-bet” QB falter at the pro level. It just doesn’t happen.

So if you have doubts about a 2011 NFL Draft prospect, don’t throw those the way of Cam Newton. Even though there’s no such thing as a sure thing, he’s as close as a player could get.

As a bonus, he also has the luxury of possibly distracting defenders with his mouthful of luminescent ivories.

Keep it mind that the little things separate the very good players from the great ones.
