2012 Top QB Recruit Commits to The Miami Hurricanes

Article By on 13th February, 2011

To many, the biggest disappointment for the Miami Hurricanes in the 2011 recruiting season was the failure to secure a QB commit. The Canes had an opportunity to reel in multiple quarterbacks, including local recruits Teddy Bridgewater (who committed, but then reconsidered following the firing of Randy Shannon) and Jacoby Brissett (who chose Florida, despite his mom’s disapproval).

The blow was softened somewhat when Michigan QB Tate Forcier made official his plans to transfer to The U, but fans were still left wishing they could have reeled in a freshman signal caller who could be the QB of the future. Coach Al Golden was disappointed too, and immediately started targeting QB recruits for the 2012 class.

Targeted…and found.

Clearwater, Florida QB Gray Crow has officially committed to the Miami Hurricanes. The ESPU 150 watch list member, who was in town at a camp for high school juniors, made it official Sunday. One of the top prospects in next year’s class, Crow will be a much needed injection of youth into the depth chart, as the only QBs currently on the roster that will be there in 2012 will be Stephen Morris (who will be a junior) and Tate Forcier (who will be a redshirt junior).  QBs Jacory Harris and Spencer Whipple will be gone, and Alonzo Highsmith Jr will be playing on the defense.

Gray Crow, who is 6’4″ and 220 lbs, is also a much needed injection of size. He will be the only QB on the depth chart (beside other potential freshman) to weight over 200 lbs, and will also be (again, pending other freshman) the tallest QB on the roster. He also brings a history of success with him, as he led Clearwater Countryside to their first ever undefeated season in 2010.

Crow’s commitment brings Miami’s 2012 recruiting class up to 5 members now, four of which are on the ESPNU 150 watch list (him, LB Keith Brown, CB Amos Leggett, and RB Randy “Duke” Johnson). This is a fast start for the Canes, which is good news after a relatively small 2011 recruiting class. As well, if the four watch list members make it onto the official ESPNU 150, that will already be more 150 commits than the Canes reeled in during the 2011 recruiting campaign (three).

The Hurricanes fandom welcomes Gray Crow to the University of Miami, and hope that he can help continue the tradition of quarterback success engineered by the likes of Jim Kelly, Bernie Kozar, Vinny Testeverde, Gino Torreta, and Ken Dorsey.
