It was one of those traditional Big Ten slugfests with “three-and-out” more often than not controlling the tempo of the game.  The defense was suffocating and the offense sputtered—no matter who was controlling the ball.

In the first quarter, the Michigan State Spartans scored with a 34 yard field goal by Brett Swenson.  Iowa answered in the second quarter with a 37 yard field goal by Daniel Murray.  At halftime it was tied 3-3.
